Know Your Anti-Depressant(s)

February 28, 2024

The first two drugs to serve specifically as antidepressants were clinically introduced in the 1950s. Antidepressants can be very helpful for people with moderate or severe depression. As with all medications you take, there are certain things you should know about them.

Vibrant Integrative Psychiatry collaborates with patients to focus on personal growth. We will identify and discuss the strengths you already have and then apply new knowledge and self-awareness to achieve greater insight into your goals and objectives. You’ll gain better control over your ability to balance your emotions and achieve your desired outcomes in your relationships and life.

HOW THEY WORK

Drugs for depression alter the equilibrium of neurotransmitters, which are brain chemicals that affect your mood. Medication can help alleviate the symptoms of depression, but it doesn’t always treat its causes. The FDA-approved generic drugs for depression are as efficient as their brand-name counterparts. Generics tend to cost less than brand names.

WHAT TO EXPECT

By and large, antidepressants work very well, especially when accompanied by talk therapy. Most people on antidepressants report that their symptoms such as sorrow, loss of interest and despair improve eventually. But the results aren’t immediate, so you’ll have to be patient. It can take up to four weeks to feel better, and even longer to feel the full benefit. Take your antidepressants for as long as your psychiatrist prescribes, even if you start to feel better sooner.

IF YOU THINK IT’S INEFFECTIVE

Tell your doctor if you don’t feel some relief after three months. You may need a larger dose or a different antidepressant. Many people don’t benefit from their initial antidepressant. You and your psychiatrist will collaborate to find the treatment that works for you. Don’t hesitate to tell your psychiatrist about any side effects. They can often be managed.

ONE MORE THING

Today’s antidepressants come with fewer side effects and drug interactions than their predecessors. Tell your psychiatrist about any prescription drug, over-the-counter meds or dietary supplement you are taking or plan to take. They could affect your antidepressant’s efficacy.
